The Questions That Create Meaningful Connections

One of the most common questions I hear from professionals is, “What should I say after ‘What do you do?’”

While that question can be a useful starting point, it rarely creates the kind of meaningful connection that builds relationships, trust, and opportunity. Throughout my career as a communication and leadership expert, I’ve found that the most successful networkers are not necessarily the most outgoing; they are the most curious.

The quality of our conversations is often determined by the quality of our questions. When we ask thoughtful questions, we move beyond small talk and create authentic connections that people remember long after the conversation ends.

Here are five of my favorite questions to ask when networking, meeting new people, or strengthening professional relationships.

1. What’s Your Biggest Challenge Right Now?

This question immediately shifts the conversation from surface-level information to what is truly important in someone’s life or work.

People often appreciate the opportunity to discuss a challenge they are facing, and it allows me to better understand their perspective, priorities, and goals. Sometimes, simply listening can be one of the most valuable things we offer another person.

2. What Are You Excited About This Year?

I love this question because it brings energy into the conversation.

When people talk about something they are looking forward to, such as a new project, a personal goal, or an exciting opportunity, their enthusiasm becomes contagious. It also gives us insight into what motivates and inspires them.

Instead of focusing on the past, this question encourages people to share their vision for the future.

3. What Project Are You Most Proud Of?

Every professional has a story behind their accomplishments.

When I ask this question, I often hear fascinating examples of perseverance, creativity, leadership, and growth. It allows people to share not just what they have achieved, but why it matters to them.

These stories often reveal far more about a person than a job title ever could.

4. What Have You Learned Recently?

I believe the most successful people are lifelong learners.

Whether the lesson comes from a book, a mentor, a challenge, or a new experience, asking this question opens the door to meaningful discussion and fresh perspectives.

I also find that it encourages a mindset of curiosity, which is one of the most important qualities in both communication and leadership.

5. Who Has Had the Biggest Influence on Your Career?

Behind every successful professional is often someone who helped shape their journey.

When people reflect on mentors, colleagues, leaders, or even life experiences that influenced them, the conversation becomes more personal and memorable. It offers valuable insight into their values, aspirations, and defining moments.

Some of the most meaningful conversations I have had started with this simple question.

The Power of Asking Better Questions

The best networkers understand that meaningful conversations are not about impressing others. They are about creating genuine connections.

When we move beyond transactional questions and show sincere curiosity, we create opportunities for stronger relationships, deeper understanding, and lasting impact.

The next time you find yourself in a networking event, client meeting, conference, or social gathering, challenge yourself to ask one of these questions. You may be surprised by where the conversation leads.

After all, people may not remember every detail of what we discussed, but they will remember how we made them feel—and thoughtful questions are one of the most powerful ways to make others feel valued, heard, and understood.
